Septic service questions Florida homeowners ask

How do I choose a septic service company in Florida?

232 of the 252 Florida companies here hold 4.5 stars or better.

  • A written price before the truck comes out, based on your tank size, with any digging, mileage or disposal fees listed.
  • Every compartment pumped, with the gallons pumped and where the waste went written on your receipt.
  • Before you agree to a new drain field or tank, see the evidence and get a second opinion from a company not selling the fix.
  • For a home sale, hire an inspector who doesn't also sell septic repairs.
  • Be wary of a company that sells bacteria or enzyme additives as a stand-in for pumping.
  • Walk away from bait pumping prices far below other quotes; the bill tends to grow once the tank is open.
  • Ask for the company's Florida septic license or certification number, and check it with Florida's Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) yourself instead of trusting the number on the truck.

How we list providers

Florida septic licensing, permits and inspection rules

Septic contractors are licensed by Florida's Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). Look up a license

Permits come from your county health department (FDEP directly in Northwest Florida and Marion County).

Florida law bars any government agency from requiring a septic inspection when a home is sold.

There is no statewide pumping schedule for conventional tanks, but aerobic treatment units must stay under a maintenance contract serviced twice a year.

Help paying for repairs: Save Our Indian River Lagoon (Brevard County) and Indian River County Septic-to-Sewer Program.

Trade groups: Florida Onsite Wastewater Association (FOWA).

Rules change. Check with your county health department (FDEP directly in Northwest Florida and Marion County) before you start work. Researched October 2026.
