Septic service questions Virginia homeowners ask

How do I choose a septic service company in Virginia?

32 of the 35 Virginia companies here hold 4.5 stars or better.

  • A written price before the truck comes out, based on your tank size, with any digging, mileage or disposal fees listed.
  • Every compartment pumped, with the gallons pumped and where the waste went written on your receipt.
  • Before you agree to a new drain field or tank, see the evidence and get a second opinion from a company not selling the fix.
  • For a home sale, hire an inspector who doesn't also sell septic repairs.
  • Be wary of a company that sells bacteria or enzyme additives as a stand-in for pumping.
  • Walk away from bait pumping prices far below other quotes; the bill tends to grow once the tank is open.
  • Ask for the company's Virginia septic license or certification number, and check it with Virginia's Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation (DPOR) yourself instead of trusting the number on the truck.

Virginia septic licensing, permits and inspection rules

Septic contractors are licensed by Virginia's Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation (DPOR). Look up a license

Permits come from your local VDH health district.

Virginia does not require a septic inspection before every sale, but sets standards for inspections requested by a lender or buyer.

Virginia sets no mandatory pump-out interval outside Chesapeake Bay Preservation Areas, where systems must be pumped or certified every 5 years.

Help paying for repairs: VEE Septic Grant (James River Septic System Repair Cost Share Program) (James River watershed), Middle Peninsula Planning District Commission (MPPDC) Septic Repair Loan Program, and SERCAP (Southeast Rural Community Assistance Project) low-interest loans.

Trade groups: Virginia Onsite Wastewater Recycling Association (VOWRA).

Rules change. Check with your local VDH health district before you start work. Researched October 2026.
